Alcoholism is the number one addiction in the USA. It destroys millions of families and individuals every year and can often start in the teenage years. People who already have addictions in the family often continue to have these problems from generation to generation. This is because addictions are hereditary. If you have a family history of addictions you are especially vulnerable to this problem.
Alcoholism can start when you are quite young but will often manifest itself in the teenage years. This is because this is the age when kids start to party and are influenced to drink by their peers. Social drinking can soon turn into dependence, if you are susceptible to addictions. Worse still in teen parties sometimes the kids are not mature enough to stop when they have had enough and just keep on drinking.
Another way that alcoholism starts is in college with parties. Again it begins with just social drinking and then goes on to taking a few drinks to relieve tension, like exams and relationships. Before you know it you are hooked and sometimes you are not able to admit it even to yourself.
When your family drinks it is very likely that you will be drinking. If alcohol is readily available kids will try some themselves or even be encouraged to do so. Pretty soon the kids will start indulging with the older members of the family and will get addicted to alcohol at an early age.
There are so many things that can trigger addiction. The main thing is to be aware of the situations and try to be careful if you know that you may be vulnerable to alcohol addiction.
